Getting Around Makkah: Transport Tips for Pilgrims

Getting Around Makkah: Transport Tips for Pilgrims

Airport to Hotel

Most pilgrims arrive through Jeddah's King Abdulaziz International Airport, from where it takes roughly 60 to 90 minutes to reach central Makkah by road, depending on traffic and time of day.

Pre-arranged transfers are generally more reliable than arranging transport after landing, since drivers can track flight status and adjust pickup times if a flight is delayed.

Moving Around the Haram Area

Within Makkah, most hotels close to the Haram are within walking distance, but for those staying further out, short local rides are common, especially during peak hours like Fajr and Isha when foot traffic is heavy.

Inter-City Travel

Traveling between Makkah, Madinah, Jeddah, and Taif is usually done by road, with journeys ranging from about 1.5 hours (Jeddah) to around 4-5 hours (Madinah), depending on the route and stops.

  • Book inter-city transfers in advance during Hajj season, when demand is highest.
  • Ask about rest stops if traveling with elderly family members.
  • Confirm vehicle type and capacity ahead of time for group travel.

Choosing the Right Vehicle

Sedans work well for small families, while SUVs and vans suit larger groups traveling with more luggage. For those prioritizing comfort, VIP vehicle options are also available on most routes.
